An outside gym facility has been created by Summerhill Community Centre volunteers in partnership with Council’s Criminal Justice Social Work Community Payback Unpaid Work Team.
The gym was opened by Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Kenny MacAskill, on Saturday 13 April.
The main purpose of the Centre is to enable real community inclusion and participation in social and sporting activities for all age groups.
The activities will be delivered by trained volunteers, will create barrier free opportunities, and develop local interest and a sense of belonging amongst local people.
Initial wider community consultation highlighted the barriers amongst local people in attending commercial gyms. Financial barriers being the most common.
The Outdoor Gym Project was funded by the Cashback/Payback funding initiative made available by Scottish Government and administered by The South West Community Justice Authority.
“This partnership has truly promoted community ownership and involvement and has helped increase community spirit at a grassroots level,” said Anne-Marie Coulter, Youth Development Co-ordinator at Summerhill.
“Local people have already began to plan their own fitness routines and some have received support to develop their personal fitness programmes at the outside gym, around their free time and this process is a great start towards people taking more responsibility for their own health and well-being.”
