Gretna registrars celebrated in Marriage Week (7 to 14 February) by announcing the wedding figures for 2012 and the 2013 Valentine’s Day ceremonies. In 2012 there were 4080 marriages in Gretna and District. 756 were in the Registration Office, 1807 were civil ceremonies out with the Office and 1517 were religious ceremonies. There were 66 civil partnerships.
This compares to 3842 marriages and 61 civil partnerships the previous year.
On Valentine’s Day this year, there were 25 marriages, 3 in the Registration Office, 9 civil ceremonies outside the office and 13 religious ceremonies.
Councillor Brian Collins, Deputy Leader and Vice-Chair of Policy and Resources Committee, says that whilst 2012 does not match the peak of 2004, it is still a healthy figure, “It is good news that the number of weddings in the Gretna registration district has been rising since 2009. The increased number of visitors benefits the economy of the area. I hope that people who have been to Dumfries and Galloway once will return and explore more of our beautiful region.”
